Basic Clay Vocab. and Knowledge
clay- organic material, earth, mud
ceramic- in-organic material that is made once clay is fired
Green ware- fragile, air dried clay
Bisque- clay that has been fired in the kiln
Firing- the process of heating clay to approximatley 100 degrees C until it becomes hard
Kiln- oven for firing clay
wedging- working the clay to ensure even moisture distribution
slip - watered down clay that acts as glue
score- making cross hatch marks in the clay
coil- long snake like shape
glaze- glass coating that is painted on pottery
RULES TO REMEMBER
Clay explodes for two reasons too thick and too wet!!
Clay should never be thicker then 3 inches or thinner then 1/2 inch
DO NOT MIX GLAZES they are not paint
Green ware and bisque ware are porous meaning they will soak up water until they are glazed and fired
